Steeldom is a Virtua On clone on Playstation, the game starts with a rather long CG intro. It is nothing exceptional, but the opening music is quite good in my opinion. Then in the option menu, you will see Japanese text everywhere. Don't worry, it is easy to figure them out after a while.
As with any fighting game, select one of the eight robots, then enter into an open arena to do battle with your opponent. Each robot has its own strength and weakness, with varying weapons and special attacks. It sounds like Sega's Virtual On, right? Sure, the gameplay is a bit similar to Virtual On, but the battle doesn't offer the same pace of excitement. The robot moves somewhat slow on the ground unless you use the turbo or dash button. One thing I like the robot is able to hover above the ground, this adds an extra element of strategy to the battles.
About the control, it is a frustrating experience for me because you need to use all 8 buttons. It took me a while to get used to it. Although the learning curve is somewhat steep, it can be overcome; the most frustrating part about Steeldom, however, is the difficulty of the game. The opponent is aggressive in the normal mode, it often moves behind you quickly, then it immediately follows with combo and special move.
In conclusion, Steeldom is an average 3D combat game, the frustrating control and difficulty are my major complains. The versus mode is a welcome addition if you want to play with your friend. If you are looking for games like Cybersled and Virtual On, I guess you can still give Steeldom a try.
