I like to thank the people at SNK to launch the most wanted RPG , Shinsetsu Samurai Spirits Bushidoretsuden. I know that some other websites had put this topic on this RPG, but I'm gonna give my personal point of view of this game. Sa, ikuze ......
Gameplay :
This is one RPG that has its own 'magic touch' in it. There are two stories that will take you far beyond your heads, excellent RPG mapping textures (even it's 2D, but it's cool), astounding RPG sound (that includes musics, sound effects, and voices too), and .... more characters that never seen in the arcade versions of the Samurai Spirits. Actually, this RPG will bring you down to your knees for hours. And also there are two chocies in the battle mode, the select mode and the manual move, which is usual in the arcade version.
Story :
Like I said there are two stories in this game. Those stories are consisted of : The Amakusa Scenario (Jiatenkourin no Sho): Amakusa Shiro Tokisada, the hero of a rebellion 150 years ago has gone evil and bound to conquer Japan. He is resurrected some how and it's up to you to stop this catastrophe. This is interesting, because each six characters has his/her own purposes to stop Amakusa Shiro. For example, you pick Haohmaru. The story begins with Haohmaru's dream about being defeated by Yagyu Jubei. Then Haohmaru is in a shrine with his sensei, Kafuuin Nicotine (Nicotine is his sensei, by the way Haohmaru respects him. I'm surely suprised at this, maybe you be suprised yourself as well). The two were arguing untill Nicotine leaving the shrine, followed by Haohmaru which is up to you to direct this wandering, sake-drinking samurai. He tries to meditate after a few talks with Nicotine and his arch rival, Kibagami Genjuro. Just as Haohmaru begin to meditate, he is struck by the appearance of Amakusa Shiro Tokisada, asking Haohmaru to joined him for evil. Of course Haohmaru says no to this devillish offer. Then Genjuro steps in and interested in this. Amakusa neglected Genjuro and vanished. Genjuro was pissed off and asks Haohmaru for a duel, which we won't be able to control at this point. Haohmaru loses this instant fight and Nicotine saves him just as Genjuro is going to make his final move. Genjuro leaves. After several talks about the situation, Haohmaru are ready and heads for Edo province to seek Jubei. Then the rest is in your hands.
Next is ....... The Mizuki Scenario (Youkadoukoku no Sho): you received a letter from Kafuuin Nicotine that tells you there an urgent matter to be discussed (this one are same for all characters, even Haohmaru). Nicotine asks you to seek for Yagyu Jubei for more explenation of this. Jubei tells us that an evil presence are bound to conquer Japan, it's Rashojin Mizuki (I think Rashojin stands for sorceress, or sometihng like that). Then you begin your adventure untill you found a lone crusader named Reon (Shippu No Reon, loosely Reon of The Wind) who are bound to destroy Rashojin Mizuki.
Both stories above are different, but I think there are some similarities. One of them is about Ankokushin Ambrosia just like in the fairly bad dubbed anime version fo the Samurai Spirits.
Sounds :
The audio in this game are kinda easy listening. Like some BGM when we're in a province/village, map travelling and when we're engaged in a battle. The voices here are so amazing, even that in a normal situation some voices are available for it. It's Japanese, but it's better than never. The voice casts in this game are the same casts that contributed their voices for a radio show in Japan with the same name, this is one title that bears with any format of communication. There are two vocal tracks in this game, Samurai No Yatsu and the opera themed ending song, Sora e. I think this game has it all.
Graphics :
The graphic are fairly the same 2D textured SNK trademark. But there are some events that really neat to be watched, like when Haohmaru are alone with his long time girl friend, Ochizu in a river side as the sun shines above them. That scene is the most memoriable in my mind. Imagine, Haohmaru in love ...... Kawaii!!
Comments :
This is one RPG that really put anyone who playing it will never made him/her turn off the PSX for a while. Altough there are some bad stuffs in it, but it doesn't matter (in my own words, kankenai ne). Even though that I'm still working out this RPG for several new stuffs, I'm hoping that the new sequel of awsome RPG will be available. If there anything you want to say about this review, just feel free to drop me an email. I am willing to take chances for this one. Thank you very much and ...... Good Luck !!
