Saga Frontier

Review #1 by Jason Ong

This game, has been programmed by the best RPG gaming company, SquareSoft. Like the old SaGa series, there is the same element of good game play and storyline.

You can start with a multitude of characters. A mystic; 4 different humans, Blue a magician, Red a swordsman, Emiria a super model, and Bard a bard(duh!); a monster, Coon; and a machine, T260G. Each character has a different story line, which may cross with the other characters. Humans are well rounded, being able to use weapons and magic. Machines are powerful weapon users, but lack any magical ability. Mystics are the most powerful magic users, being able to use any magic including a special dark magic. Monsters can absorb the abilities of enemies and become new monsters. Saga Frontier also will be implementing a "Free Scenario System," in which decisions the player makes will affect the outcome of the game.

Saga Frontier basically starts off with a personal story arc in which each must complete. The result - a full screen picture of the character you are playing and his/her/it name in Jap. and Eng.

After that, each character is to train up and complete each's main story. Most of them have a storyline of revenge, while Coon has to find a magic ring to restore its homeland, T260G has to find its mission and complete it, and Blue has to train up on his magic to face his twin brother in a final battle to the end...

Point to note: Japanese knowledge is something handy while playing. The biggest difference is the fightning part. All HP(Hit Points) is refilled after each battle, but not anything else. The enemies become harder with the level you train your character up to. This may sound like bad news, but the Linked Techs are helpful to your advantage. Each special attack can be combined with another character's or more to form a ultra powerful attack. Nearly all specials can be linked, but not all the time the linked techs may work.

In SaGa Frontier, we've only made some progress with 2 characters: Blue and Emiria.

For Emiria, her story is similar to the Fugitive. Starting in a prison, she relates her story to the player. Came home one day and found her place ransacked and a stranger who just killed her husband. So, questioned and jailed, the story continued from there. You start with 2 other jail-mates. One a swordswoman and the other a fighter. Both are very high leveled and can help you throughout the whole time in jail. After many rooms, you come to the air vent and meet up with the Boss. A preying mantis, this sucker can whack you, but if you had trained up before hand, its mince meat.

Soon after prison, you came back home, only to find the murderer waiting for you. Another stranger comes along and saves you. Passing out, you appear in a base. The 2 characters in the jail house with you also appear in the base, as members of some movement. Giving you a gun, you start to train up using guns as the main weapon.

In Blue's case, he just got honours in a university of magic. During his graduation, he was informed of his destiny. To kill his twin brother, Rogue. So his quest for magic begins. Being a powerful magic user, he can learn magic faster than anyone in the game. Chose between 2 different groups of magic, symbols or runes, and tarot cards. If you pick one, Rogue will be using the other. Once picked, you cannot change or buy any other spell in the other group. There are other types of magic too: nova(or sun) and night(or moon); yin and yang. The personal quest of Blue is in the mirror place. Use an array of coloured lights to open different doors to lead to goodies or baddies.

Overall, the game has my thumbs up and my PSX overheating.
