Real Bout Fatal Fury

Review #1by Stephane Dorelli

Every console fan knows FATAL FURY, a member of the SOUTHTOWN series. This game, like Street Fighter 2 is a fighting one, where you have to beat an amount of fighters in order to see the end. I don't know the scenario, as all the doc is in Japanese, but it seems that GEESE HOWARD is back. Wolfgang Krauser is not present.

Ok, let's start playing. The introduction looks like the intro of STREET FIGHTER ZERO 2 : all characters appear, and the steel which is at the back of Terry's jacket zooms. A voice pronounce the title. Note : it's fun : when I listen to the intro track on my audio-cd drive, I enjoy listening to the second title music. Indeed, the programmers have done 2 intro soundtracks : one with a man which says "Real Bout Garou denset's " and another, with the same man, which says "Real Bout : Fatal Fury". But, as this man is japanese, he strangely pronounce the second name, and say : "Reaaaal Boot : fetal foury". Very funny :) As all the other Fatal Furies, you play with 2 plans.

Graphics : They are neo-geo typical. The guys who do the Fatal fury games spend their life doing arcade games. We can feel it : all graphics are clean, the characters are big (Franco Bash is still giant) and the backgrounds are still detailed (public who does a lot of thing at the same time, while you're fighting). However, they are similar to FATAL FURY 3.

Animation : Very very good. All moves smoothly, every characters move quickly, with a lot of frames. Street Fighter Zero can go home, 'cause playstation shows that she's able to animate a lot of sprites with good graphics, in spite of its low-ram... We can also admire a zoom in a scene between the last level and the boss fight.

Sounds / Musics : All are CD musics (you can listen to them in your car :) ). Very good, because they are not techno (all psx titles contains techno tracks, why ?). You can listen to hard-rock like tracks, or classical style. Some could be ripped from a movie. Very impressive. SFX are, as usual, very good, with a lot of digits (Kim Kap Kwan is very angry in this episode)

Playable ? : Sure ! Neo Geo Game = Playable game. I've beaten the game almost 20 times, and I still play it. Amazing. The difficulty level goes from very easy to expert (a very very very hard harder hardest mode. I'm goot at fighting games, but this mode is incredibly hard !).

Overall : A must buy, if you like fighting games. All is almost perfect.

Pro and cons :

Graphics :

+ Huge character choice, bieutifuls guys and girls.

+ Realistic backgrounds.

- a small amount of levels. As you fight 3 opponents at the same level, only 6 levels are included.

- very similar to Fatal Fury 3.

Animation :

+ Smooth, quick; perfect.

+ Combos are very violents.

+ No slowdowns.

+ VERY SHORTS CD access

Sounds FX:

+ every character has his own BG music. + Vocal digits are very good.

+ Geese howard remix (boss level) is very impressive. A lot better than the Ffury special one.

- soundtracks are too short.

Playablility :

+ This game is so good that you'll play it again & again even if you'e beaten the game a lot of times.

+/- A bit too easy. But play the Expert mode, and you'll be 90 years old when you will have finished it.

9.5 /10 ---> A must to buy ! A must to buy.
