Puffy: P.S. I Love You

Review #1 by Dan Hong

In Japan and most parts of Asia, Puffy is a household name. In the U.S., it is nearly as popular, but for a different reason. To Asians, Puffy is the mega-pop duo of cute Japanese girls, Ami Ohnuki and Yumi Yoshimura, musically produced by the talented Tamio Okuda. Their merchandise, designed by the creator of Parappa the Rapper, Rodney Greenfield, is everywhere in Japan. Puffy appear in Shiseido, Yamaha, and Meiji commercials; they have their own tv show on Thursday nights; and have their name and image on about anything you can think of. To Americans however, Puffy only means the overrated "hip-hop" superstar Sean "Puffy" Combs. He may have status here but he doesn't have his own Playstation game.

This game, just released in Japan in March 1999, is a great addition to the universe of Puffy goodies out there. For Puffy fans, this is pure joy. Luckily, this game does not disappoint! There are three different modes of gameplay. One is a photofile where you shoot a bunch of metal file drawers to get a bunch of hidden Puffy photos. Its simple fun but the real reward is getting to view and save the pictures of Puffy in all their cute glory! A second mode of the game requires the player to shoot cans to get Puffy's ecstatic approval. There is no hidden reward for this, I think, except for Puffy saying that you did a good job. The third part of the game has four music videos you can view, one of which is the newest music video Puffy has out on TV. Its a spoof on a Jimi Hendrix-looking fellow roaming the jungle who falls unconscious in a river bed and rocks out after Puffy gives him a "magic mushroom." It's a very funny video of a great song which fans will get a kick out of. The other three videos are live videos of Puffy in concert. Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of Japanese so I can't translate the titles of the songs.

If you're a Puffy fan and own a Playstation, you MUST get this essential item for your collection. And even if you don't own a Playstation, you should get one for this nice little surprise. Its cover price, 2,940 yen, is relatively cheap for a game. As for non-Puffy fans, you will undoubtedly become fans if you ever come across this gem. I LOVE PUFFY!
