First of all I should make one thing clear, I am not a typical player. Most play in terms of strategic intelligence. I ignore the Gundam people and pump up Mazinger. I know it's a vast change of pase in a game that the Gundam people are the key characters story wise but it's not my fault they are not as cool as Mazinger and the gang. Anyway, lets get top the review itself.
This is the best game(pre-FF7) I have ever played. The game is cool not because you get to use cool anime characters but because it has such great gameplay. The controls are so simple that I was able to memorize what each thing does even though it's in Japanese. I was lucky to have a Japanese friend help me out in the translation, people who don't have this luxury might want to think hard before getting this game. It takes patience to learn the controls.
The graphics of the characters are great. I can't play 4th Super Robot War anymore because the characters just look so stupid after looking at them in this game. The sounds are also better with the themes song clearer. While there are less characters in this game, every single person(even the bad people) in battle mode has a voice. The difficulty is also perfect for the game. It's true that the really good characters can pump themselves up to the point that they can blow up most bosses easily but thats part of the story. The robots you control are super powerful, supposively more powerful than anything the enemy has(according to each series) the only way the enemy gets an advantage is through sheer numbers(just like in each series). And large numbers you willsee.
There are two major roads to take in this game. I wish they would have given you more of a choice on who you take on which missing as I would have loved to keep Mazinger and Gaiking together for the entire game(my two favorites) but thats only a minor complaint. All the returning characters don't get an opening introduction which was kind of sad but I guess I can always look at 4th for those. Would have been nice to see a upgraded Dancougar combination sequence though.
Overall this is a very, very good game. The gameplay is excellent and you won't be dissappointed with the handling of your favorite characters. I would definately recommend this game to anyone.
