Ah, it's only one more fighting game from SNK... But think again, this one is different. We all know SNK, one of the best game producers in the planet, so, once again they pull off a brand new trick! Yes, Last Blade is a great game, indeed.
Graphics: Not as cool as the arcade or Neo Geo CD version anyway. We all know the PSX has it's flaws when it comes to 2d sprite based games, and this one is no exception. But let's forget about the sometimes, especially in large characters' bodies, choppy animations and talk about the overall. All characters have a decent amount of animation, ranging from winning poses, death animations, slashes, kicks and, of course, special moves. Some are really large, like Akari's specials, some are not so flashy (Miakata Moriya), but they're all great.
Sound: Couldn't possibly be any better than this! Last Blade features the best themes since the times of Samurai Shodown 1! The songs are ALL very catchy, I often find myself singin' them while at school or anywhere else while not playing the game. Sound Effects are also great, everything from sword slashes to bodies hitting wooden floors is done beautifuly. This game offers a great amount of voice-acting! Complete with the usual hadoken-esque voice acting for moves, but theres also dialog before rounds (KOF anyone?).
Game Modes and Extras: Among the usual Practice, Survival, Story and Versus, there is also a new one, altough no actual playing the game is envolved, what I call the Omake option. Here you can see characters' biographies, combo videos, story, etc all guided by Akari and Juzoh, those two just can't stop talking! They make comments out of everything you watch, it's just great! You can take a look at some artwork too! By the way, this may not be the right place to talk about it, but the game sports a very cool opening video. 100% Anime!!! So, for those of you who are Anime lovers, what are you waiting for?!?!? (hint, hint) Buy the game, rent it, do something, just make sure you watch the opening sequence.
Loading Times: What could you expect?!?! There ARE load times, but they're small (thank God!), kinda KOF 98-esque, so there is no problem to just wait a few seconds. There's also an option to show some artwork instead of loading screens.
Overall: Last Blade is a late game, combining the very best in the greatest SNK series of games: King of Fighters meet Samurai Shodown/Spirits. If you like'em both, there's no better option then buying this one.
