Langrisser IV & V

Review by Faust

Langrisser has always been the very best the Strategy RPG genre has to offer, and this Playstation installment of numbers 4 and 5 carries that tradition well. First off, a little background on this version. Both Langrisser 4 and 5 were originally released on the Saturn, then compiled for release on the Playstation for this version, subtitled Final Edition. The developers decided to enhance Langrisser 4 somewhat by putting it in the more refined Langrisser 5 engine. So, essentially, the two become the same game, just a combination of the stories of Langrisser 4 and 5. Langrisser has always used a unique "leader - troop" system in battle. What this is, is you have several main characters just like you would in any other strategy RPG, but then you hire soldiers for them, making the game more of an army vs. army fight than the smaller scale battles found in most strategy RPGs. Graphics are great 2d sprites, some of the best you will find in any game today. Sounds are good but not particulary noticeable. The music however, stands out as wonderful. Langrisser 4 has one of the best soundtracks of any game in my opinion. Langrisser 5's music is also good, but I personally prefer 4's. Being an import RPG, it may often be passed over by gamers scared they won't be able to go through it because of the japanese. That is not really an issue in this game however, as it is extremely linear and you will have no problem going through it at all. If you are a fan of the series, genre, or simply a dedicated gamer, you owe it to yourself to get this game. This is one of the games that North American gamers get screwed over royally not getting a domestic release.
