Fire Pro Wrestling G

Review by Faust

Before I start spewing word after word about Fire Pro G, let me say that I play and watch a LOT of wrestling, so I know what I'm talking about. And to be blunt, Fire Pro-Wrestling G is almost everything you could ever want in a wrestling game. Let me start with the heart of a wrestling game, its fighting engine. It is a great, and fun, battle system, but not the best. The problem that will plague most beginning players is the grappling system. Unlike Acclaim or THQ's(or to be accurate AKI's) WWF and WCW game engines, there is no "grapple button". You simply walk close to the opponent, and you will lock up with them. I personally prefer the WCW Revenge grappling system, but this way the battle is kept somewhat more back and forth. Other aspects of its fighting engine that could be better is the flaws the game's 2d creates. Specifically throwing opponents into the corners to do top rope maneuvers, or whatever. Because of the nature of the game, you have to be in the exact "center line" of the ring so that you can even throw them horizontly. But as said before, aside from those two weak points, the engine is just great. Control is very easy to learn, and yet somehow retains a degree of complication that is very rare in any genre of game. Have you ever sitting there watching WCW Nitro or WWF Raw, and start thinking about becoming a wrestler? Well, here is your chance. No other game can come close to the FPW wrestler creation mode. You can assign literally each individual move, every single one of your character's statistics, a very large number of abilities, and more! I've probably spent more time creating characters than actually playing the game! One of the games weak points is graphics... at least on the surface. Many people will look at the 2d graphics, notice the lack of details, colors, etc. and just dismiss them as primative. What these people don't realize is the shear number of animation frames that are in the game, not to mention the meticulous pallette management neccesary for the color changing in character creation. If the graphics had been any better, we'd probably have to lose a lot of the great features that makes this series unique, specifically the in-depth character graphics creation. I don't know about you, but that makes out-dated graphics more than acceptable! Something a lot of you probably wants to know about is how import friendly this game is. Well, unfourtunatly its complicated system of, well, pretty much everything will prevent some people from really being able to play the game without help. Fortunatly, because of the numerous amount of FAQs and Translations on this game, almost anyone should be able to get through it all with ease. To wrap up, this game is loaded with more features than you will find in any wrestling game on the market today, and is most definitly worth getting ahold of! If you are a wrestling, fighting, or even "party/multi-player" game fan, then this game is probably simply the best game for your money.
