Fatal Fury has always been looked down upon as a Street Fighter rip off. Maybe, but if it is, it's the best damn Street Fighter rip-off out there. It's got good play mechanics, great graphics, good story, and awesome characters (including one of the best bad guys in my opinion, Geese Howard). But can this 2-D fighting masterpiece be translated to 3-D without messing with it's proven formula? Well, if Street Fighter could do it by going to EX, then Fatal Fury can buy going to Wild Ambition. In fact, the game reminds you of EX just as much as Fatal Fury 1 did of Street Fighter 2. And in my opinion, that's a good thing. It retains all of the moves and characters, while updating the graphics to 3-D. Just like in SF EX, the characters are fully 3-D while the backgrounds are pre rendered 2-D. Does the 3-D slow the 2-D style down though? Nope. It's pretty much just as fast as it's 2D counterpart and all of your original favorite combos can still be pulled off as if it were 2-D. Terry Bogard's cool Burn Knuckle, Kim Kapwan's awesome Flip Kick super, Geese's cool super's and of course, Mai's *ahem* moves, are all intact. The game gives you a great list of characters, including 2 secret, Duck King and Mr. Karate. If you were a fan of Fatal Fury or other SNK fighters then, this game will make you happy now.
Graphics: The 3D characters look good, if not just a tad bit blocky. And it does look kind of weird nowadays with the 3D fighters on top of 2D backgrounds. The graphics have the same good and bad qualities that EX had. 8/10
Sound: All the fighters' tunes are there, and the game has plenty of voices. It's standard fighting game fair, but that's ok. 9/10
Playability: They translated the 2D controls over very well to 3D. They are a tad bit floaty, but nothing that should hinder you for long. The supers are still extremely hard to do though! 9/10
Fun: Well, fans of SNK fighters will eat it up, while others may scoff at this when they have Tekken 3 to play. I fit into the former category, I love SNK fighters so this one is ok by me! 9/10
Overall, I'd say this is a good one to pick up, on import or just wait until it gets it's US release. There aren't that many fighters coming out on the PSX that are worth getting any time soon, so this is the best one out there right now.
